Waywood Fair Trade is part of Waywood Enterprises Limited, a UK limited company. Director and company founder is Dr Stuart Wood.
Stuart has a long history of supporting those who work amongst the poorest
and most underprivileged people around the world: people who, through no fault
of their own face hardship, persecution, extradition and famine. So,
when Waywood Enterprises was
formed it was natural to include support of this type of work in the overall
company vision.
The concept of fairly traded products is relatively new to many. However, it has
been the powerhouse driving organisations like Tearfund, Traidcraft and Oxfam for
decades, who have worked tirelessly to ensure that people receive a fair return
for their labours.
Waywood Fair Trade was established by Stuart
to sell fairly traded products from a reputable supplier like TUMI,
so that creative people, artisans and craftsmen who would not otherwise receive
reward for their skills could be supported. The support provided for
these people and their families goes beyond monetary, as important as that is,
to helping them establish new links and co-operatives, regaining their dignity
and providing opportunities that not otherwise be available: basics such as
education, clothing and a roof over their heads.
Stuart started in academia, gaining a PhD in neuropharmacology. He then worked in the pharmaceutical industry for more than 18 years, first in clinical research and later as technical support/educator to clinicians and healthcare professionals. During this time he also provided internal company training and was active on numerous teams, whilst maintaining links as a visiting lecturer and presenter at a local University.
Stuart started playing drums at 19, taking up world
percussion some 10 years later. Over the years he has worked, played
sessions and recorded with a wide range of bands; locally, nationally and
internationally. His playing experience includes working with Psalm Drummers
where he was also one of five drummers involved in the 2005 procession and
enthronement of Rev Dr John Sentamu as Archbishop of York and also playing at the
Calling All Nations event in
July 2006 at the Olympiastadion, Berlin.
His CD, Soundscapes, using nearly 100
different percussion instruments (plus a few melodic ones) was released to
critical acclaim in 1998. The year 2002 saw fulfilment of another project
with publication of
Friendship
is a Verb (in a hurting world), a book of poetry and thoughts on
friendships and relationships, written by Stuart after a period of
serious illness.
Stuart has run various percussion
workshops for all ages, inspiring and encouraging others to discover their own
creativity. His work in schools was broadened as he combined his experiences
to create workshops which supported and revised various aspects of the Key stage 1
and Key Stage 2 curriculum.
Stuart has also used his
knowledge of the instruments, his science and industry background and his music experiences
to produce workshops meeting specific needs for customers from a range of different backgrounds.
